I’ve recently been reading some blogs about the paucity of women as speakers at Web conferences. There are some glaringly one-sided numbers, which are eye-opening. And I must reflect, somewhat soberly, that this kind of lack of representation isn’t terribly new or surprising.
What does take me by surprise is how many people seem to trot out relatively old arguments about why that bias exists. I mean, it doesn’t seem to matter how many interesting studies or opinion pieces are written… when challenged on sexist bias, Web geeks fall back on some pretty tired excuses. For a field that seems to be creative, and interested in breaking new ground, that disappoints me.
