I ran into a new term this weekend. I’ve heard of software distributed as “shareware” — which usually involves payment on some kind of honour system — and I’ve heard of freeware, which is pretty much what it sounds like.

But I just ran into the term “helpware”, which was described as free stuff that, if you use if and it’s useful to you, you should consider donating something to the original author’s favourite charity. I kinda thought that was a novel approach for software distribution.
