One of my favourite quotes appeared today on the quotations.com site:
In preparing for battle I have always found that plans are useless, but planning is indispensable.
Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890 – 1969)
I like this quote because I think it says a lot about how we approach planning on agile projects. When starting out, having a plan is critical but sticking to the plan is not. It’s not about the plan, it’s about planning. Developing iteratively provides opportunities to review the plan and update it as needed to reflect changing needs and priorities, allowing the team to focus on current customer priorities and delivering value. To me this is a key advantage of agile development over traditional, plan-driven approaches.
