Fixing fast clocks in RedHat on VMWare

We have a few VMWare machines running RedHat EL 4, and their clocks run fast (like really fast) until we fuss with the vmware-tools. This is awkward to do without a GUI up, so I’ve found it easier to change the kernel config. Edit /boot/grub/grub.conf and change the kernel boot params from

kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.9-5.EL ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 rhgb quiet

to

kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.9-5.EL ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 rhgb quiet clock=pit

and reboot

> /sbin/shutdown -r now
